Based in the Syria office in Deir Ezzor and reporting directly to the Social Cohesion Officer, the Project Assistant will provide a variety of tasks in support of GIZ funded project:

Contributing to Stability in Northeast Syria.  This project contributes to the organization’s overarching approach to social cohesion and inclusive development in NES by exploring conflict dynamics through the perspectives of community members, relevant authorities, and service providers. 

The project assistant will work closely with the social cohesion program officer who is the focal point for the partner. S/he will perform a variety of tasks to ensure that partners are aligned with the financial, compliance and PAQ components of the subaward. S/he will closely support and follow the implementation of partner activities from the design phase through to implementation and close out, including meeting with partners, reviewing partner reports and providing feedback as needed. S/he will play a critical role in contributing to project outcomes by documenting lessons learned and carrying out a mapping of other social cohesion actors in the project locations. The project assistant will work closely with the Social Cohesion Officers, Subaward partners, procurement, and other relevant departments to ensure smooth, efficient, and effective implementation of the program.

 

LEADERSHIP:  

  • Represents the organization in a professional manner at all times, acting with the highest levels of integrity and personal accountability. 
  • Support program officers in reviewing documents, reviewing payment process, narrative reports, and supporting documents.
  • Support the partners through conducting regular visits to ensure the smooth implementation of the activities.
  • Carry out a mapping of social cohesion and civil society organizations in Deir Ezzor to contribute to and complement the GIZ programming.
  • Track partner project targets against the workplan.
  • Participate in community level data collection and documentation in support of the program’s monitoring, evaluation and learning; including the documentation of impact/success stories and photos relevant to activities implemented.
  • Prepare weekly program progress reports for the social cohesion team.
  • Organize and participate in the facilitation of meetings/workshops/trainings to help increase the capacity partners to implement Social Cohesion programs.
  • Keep up to date with all contextual changes and the impact on current future projects.
  • Assist in any other task or duty assigned by the supervisor
  • Integrate community approaches, gender sensitivity and capacity building into all activities as appropriate.
  • Fulfill Mercy Corps’ Program Management Minimum Standards based on the organization-wide guide.
  • Ensure all interventions adhere to Mercy Corps’ Gender Policy, Do No Harm principles, and beneficiary accountability standards.
  • Ensure compliance with donor and organization regulations related to humanitarian programming.
  • Ensure compliance with security procedures and policies as determined by country leadership.
  • Proactively ensure that team members operate in a secure environment and are aware of policies.

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, social sciences, human rights, project management or other related field.
  • Minimum of 1 year work experience in project implementation, preferably with an international organization.
  • A minimum of one year work in partnership with local partners to implement subawards is required.  
  • Experience working in rural areas in Northeast Syria, particularly in Deir Ezzor or its surrounding areas.
  • Experience working in a multi-organizational team (international and national partners).
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, ability to follow procedures, meet deadlines and work independently and cooperatively with team members.
  • Fluency in Arabic and English, both written and spoken.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English required, including report development, writing and editing.
  • Organizational and time management skills.
  • Willingness to travel in and out of field
  • Strong understanding of the project management cycle.
  • Good interpersonal skills
