Aid Gate Organization (AGO) is an independent, nonpartisan, national organization in Iraq whose history goes back to 2014 with the beginning of ISIL’s occupation in Iraq. At that time and throughout the mass conflicts occurring from 2014 onwards, ISIL groups took control of large swathes of the country, including Nineveh, Salah al-Din, Anbar, and parts of Diyala. This period witnessed an unprecedented wave of displacement for people who lived in these areas in addition to extreme human rights violations. With the Iraqi government, unable to provide much-needed, widespread assistance, many international organizations entered the country to facilitate a response. In doing so, local community members were actively recruited to assist in the movement and return of displaced peoples, while providing them with emergency life-saving assistance to meet their basic needs. Since 2014, AGO has been working untiringly to help Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), returnees, and vulnerable host communities for the implementation of whole-of-community resilience-building measures in Iraq. Today AGO is functional in Salah al-Din, Kirkuk, and the Nineveh governorates, with 50–150 employees, depending on the situation in the region. We are currently working on expanding our operations into the Anbar governorate as well as southern Iraq through proven programs to rebuild the lives of men, women, children, and refugees, IDPs, minorities, ethnic groups and persons with disabilities. AGO was born when a group of Iraqi volunteers joined hands together to assist IDPs initially by addressing emergency response ensuring that vulnerable population has access to water and hygiene facilities, basic household items, fuel for heating and primary health care. At that time, AGO’s work was carried out by private donations from team members as well as contributions from the local community who were eager to support the well-being of crisis-affected populations. AGO conducted widespread humanitarian interventions and support: including distributions of food, water, clothing, Non-food Items (NFI’s), and other items for in-camp and non-camp settings. Furthermore, our volunteer team assisted multiple international NGOs as a prospective capacity partner, particularly on the frontlines as different areas of the country were liberated from ISIL control. Due to the expansion of the team’s work in Nineveh, Salah-al-Din, and the Kirkuk governorates, the volunteer team was legally registered as an official organization with the Department of NGOs (DNGO) in Iraq in 2018. Later, in 2021, the registration was renewed on 4th August 2021, under registration number 1D2108009. Currently, AGO is partnering with various national and international donors and organizations such as COOPI, ACF, UNDP, IOM, WUSC, IHF, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of France (France Expertise) extending humanitarian services for vulnerable in need (VIN). AGO intends to grow and diversify its programs responding to the ever-increasing set of challenges facing the diverse communities of Iraq by strengthening the means of implementation through National, local, and Global Partnership for Sustainable Development aligning with SDG 17: “Partnership for Goals”.. AGO’s work focuses on durable solutions, livelihood sustainability, social cohesion and peace building, protection, and climate action with the capacity to address other areas as needed.
